Pixie Secret
One of the biggest myths of the 20th century is that when women joined the workforce, they began to hire domestic help. WRONG! In fact, domestic employment decreased. Before the feminist revolution, women used to stay home and hire domestic help (and we’re not talking Rockefellers, we’re talking the middle class on up in small towns, big towns and suburbia!)
When women entered the workforce, an odd phenomenon occurred: even though now working outside the home, they still felt compelled to continue their old job, running a household and everything else they used to hire out: taking care of children, cooking, cleaning, driving, gardening, household repair, etc… (exhausted yet?) Women who decided not to join the workforce felt like they couldn’t hire help if they weren’t “working.” No wonder women today are overwhelmed! Over the course of the past century, we have somehow graduated from holding one job to having more than five.
Make a Change
If women hold down the equivalent of five jobs, we should be rolling in money and savings. Unfortunately, most of us have replaced spending money on domestic help with consumption, yes thanks to Madison Avenue and the power of modern advertising, we now spend all our disposable income on home furnishings, clothing, restaurants, take-out, etc.. Don’t get us wrong, Pixies like shopping as much as the next person, but we found that our consumption didn’t generate the results we wanted (an enjoyable, calmer life.) We learned that fulfilling our wants and needs, not only meant buying that beautiful new Coach tote bag, it also meant hiring help to ease the stress in our lives.
As Americans, we’ve grown squeamish about hiring and using domestic help. PixiesDidIt! does not suggest a return to “Upstairs/Downstairs” (perhaps by now an obscure BBC series that aired on PBS) or “Remains of the Day.” We’re creating a new paradigm, weaving domestic help back into our lives for modern times so life becomes enjoyable for all of us again.
We understand that this sounds lovely, but perhaps “You are on a budget and don’t spend that much on your house.” Point of fact is, the average Pottery Barn customer — spends $2,800 a year on home furnishings and accessories. For the almost $3,000 you spend per year on your home, shouldn’t it be your dream home? Shouldn’t everything have a place, shouldn’t you walk in the door and feel a sense of peace and calm rush over you as you leave the stresses of the outside world behind? If that made you laugh, then you are not spending that $3,000+ on the right things and you need Pixies to help you realize this dream and keep it that way!
