“Keep ladles, tongs, and spatulas in place by attaching adhesive Velcro strips to both the handles and the bottom of the utensil drawer.” — Julie Edelman, author of The Ultimate Accidental Housewife (Hyperion).

Is it just me or is this idea way too reminiscent of that 90s flick Sleeping with the Enemy? Can’t you just see the evil husband with his 70s mustache saying to Julia Roberts, “Honey, why is the soup ladle where the spatula should go?”

I could totally see a Classic (like me) or a Fun determined to have everything in its place attempting this idea. So, there you go. If you think this idea is cool on first glance, you probably know you’re either a Classic or a Fun or maybe an Organic Structure or Smart Structure with too much time on your hands, over doing things (or a crazy homicidal evil husband with a 70s mustache … kidding). Either way, before embarking on this adventure, I say maybe you need to exercise the big picture side of you and ask yourself if a drawer with one broad category is really enough and your time on this earth is too precious to ask your loved one why they put the spatula where the ladle goes or … wait, was that vice versa??

Now, if my little diatribe wasn’t enough to dissuade you then ask yourself why this solution appeals to you. For me, it’s that things always shift when I close the drawer so they’re never in the same place and I’m always digging around for the wine opener. If you don’t want things moving around then put down a squishy mat in the bottom of the drawer. Something that’s like a rug pad for drawers — you can find them wherever you’d get contact paper for kitchen shelves. The Container Store has ’em. I got this idea from the vacation house we stayed at last week. I thought it was in the same genre as Edelman’s tip but easier … as of course, life should be.

Best for Classics, Funs and Good for Organic and Smart Structures
